The Psychology of Women Achievement Motivation David McClellend Achievement motivation is a function of the Need to Achieve (nAch) and the need to avoid failure Used the TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) Look for themes of achievement – doing well, succeeding, forward thinking, etc. But this formula didn’t predict women’s achievement, so there must be something else. Fear of Success Matina Horner – 1978 Fear of Success – women more so than men fear negative consequences of success (unpopularity, loss of femininity) For men: “After first-term finals, John find himself at the top of his medical school class.” For women: “After first-term finals, Anne finds herself at the top of her medical school class.” Three themes: 1. Social rejection fears 2. Worries about womanhood/femininity 3.Denial of reality 62% of women vs. 9% of men wrote fear of success themes. Critique? When both are given Anne prompts today, 49% of women and 42% of men write fear of
