Ryan Wisneski September 23, 2007 Assignment #1 #4 An individual with mental illness can be easily diagnosed This statement is truly wrong and I strongly disagree that it is easy to diagnose mental illness. Mental illness could not be easily diagnosed when perfectly sane people experience many of the same characteristics that the truly mentally ill live with on a daily basis. “Research by sociologists who have studied the interactions among people who are thought of as mentally ill suggests that such a label may cause one to define oneself as ill and to behave in ways that confirm the self-definition” (Kornblum and Julian, 2007: 72). In fact, many people choose to label themselves as mentally ill and doctors have a hard time proving them wrong since the diagnoses are so loosely used and applied. These people are those that face long term jail sentences and to ease their sentencing they plead insanity, with such a lack of knowledge of a true definition of mentally ill many of these criminals end up getting the easy way out.
