THE SCIENCE OF BIOLOGY: THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD mechanist = one who believes that all living things are governed by natural forces (physical laws). vitalist = one who believes that the universe is at least partially governed by supernatural powers. Mechanists deal in cause and effect relationships while vitalists often rely on teleological statements. Generally. scientists are mechanists. teleology = the study of evidences of design in nature that assumes that nature is of supernatural design and possesses some end purpose. Teleological statements do show up in science because scientists often explain things in terms of their final causes. BASIC STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD 1. OBSERVATION e.g. Wild hamsters only breed during the spring and summer months of the year. Wild hamsters do not breed during the winter months. 2.
