1 Appendix SE Fixed Resistors and Capacitors SE.1 Fixed Resistor Codes and Types (Codes based on BS/EN/IEC 60062 Marking codes for resistors and capacitors ) Color Code. Table SE.1.1 shows the color code for indicating resistance values to 2 and 3 significant figures, as well as tolerances and, if needed, temperature coefficient. The minimum number of bands is 3 and would apply to a ± 20% tolerance resistor, where the first band is the first figure, the second band is the second figure, and the third band is the power of ten multiplier. When resistors are specified to 3 significant figures, they must have a tolerance of ± 1% or better. When 5 or 6 color bands are used, then to avoid any confusion as which is the first band and which is the last, the last band is made 1.5 to 2 times wider then the other bands. Examples . (a) Three bands: b 1 (red) b 2 (violet) b 3 (orange); denotes a ± 20% resistor whose value is specified to two significant figures as: 27 × 10 3 = 27 k Ω . (b) Four bands of equal widths: b 1 (orange) b 2 (white) b 3 (yellow) b 4 (gold); the last band is unambiguously a tolerance band; hence the color code denotes a ± 5% resistor Table SE.1.1 Color Code for Fixed Resistors Value Figures Multiplier Tolerance Temp coeff 10 –6 / ° C Color b 1 b 2 b 3 b 4 b 5 b 6 Silver 10 –2 ± 10% Gold 10 –1 ± 5% Black 0 1 200 Brown 1 10 ± 1% 100 Red 2 10 2 ± 2% 50 Orange 3 10 3 ± 0.05% 15 Yellow 4 10 4 25 Green 5 10 5 ± 0.5% Blue 6 10 6 ± 0.25% 10 Violet 7 10 7 ± 0.1% 5 Grey 8 10 8 1 White 9 10 9 None ± 20% b 1 b 2 b 3 b 4 b 5 b 6

2 whose value is specified to two significant figures as: 39 × 10 4 = 390 k Ω . (c) Five bands: b 1 (red) b 2 (blue) b 3 (violet) b 4 (orange) b 5 (brown); as is clear from Table SE1.2 below, three significant figures have to be used with resistance values that are specified to a tolerance of better than ± 5%; hence the color code denotes a ± 1% resistor whose value is specified to three significant figures as: 267 × 10 3 = 267 k Ω . (d) Six bands: b 1 (violet) b 2 (brown) b 3 (green) b 4 (gold) b 5 (brown) b 6 (red); denotes a ± 1% resistor having a temperature coefficient of ± 50 × 10 –6 / ° C and a value specified to three significant figures as: 715 × 10 –1 = 71.5 Ω . Letter and Digit Code.
