James Corcoran CSCI 180 St. John Colon 11/1/10 Magnavox Odyssey and Home Pong The Magnavox Odyssey and Home Pong are the first two home entertainment video game systems ever developed and greatly influenced the development on the video game industry. The Magnavox Odyssey was the first system to be released, and was relatively unsuccessful. Home Pong was released three years after the Magnavox Odyssey and sold much better. Ultimately, these units differed in technology, design and console features, and marketing strategies. Home Pong was more technologically advanced than the Magnavox Odyssey. Home Pong was shipped in 1974 using a chip that replaced the “hundreds of wires” needed to use the Magnavox Odyssey. Although Home Pong’s prototype used many wires, the chip fixed this problem. The Magnavox Odyssey used all outdated discrete logic circuits that yielded a much slower and less smooth gaming experience than Home Pong. However, the Magnavox Odyssey was technologically advanced in some areas.
