Cultural deprivation Theory a. disadvantaged and underprivileged circumstances of the households b. adopted the slogan “difference, not deficit,” insisting that the problem of black underachievement klay with the schools, not the children. c. Schools were unprepared to teach children who brought different norms, customs, and behavior to the classroom. 2. New Ethnicity Movement a. saw ethnic groups across the land assert a renewed pride in their distinctive customs, traditions, and languages. b. Liked “cultural pluralism” and hated “assimilation” 3. Liberation Movements a. Challenged legitimacy of authoritative institutions. b. Their goals: understanding and appreciation for cultural groups, correcting omissions and misrepresentations, examining historical events and conflicts “from diverse perspectives” c. Value 3 things: their own heritage, “the uniqueness of cultures” other than their own, and the “richness of cultural diversity and commonality” generally.
