The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act requires public schools to provide educational rights and protections to homeless children and youth. 1. Children may continue to attend school of origin or school in temporary location. 2. Timely transfer of student records 3. Must be offered same services as other students, i.e., transportation, special education 4. Mandates professional training for school personnel 5. States must gather demographic data on homeless children B. Schools cannot deny enrollment to homeless students because they lack traditional enrollment paper work. C. Extent of Child Homelessness in Georgia 1. Nearly 60,000 experience homelessness each year 2. Ranks 47 th in the number of homeless children 3. 12 out of every 100 children are homeless D. Poverty is most likely to affect the young, persons of color, women, full-time workers in lowest paying jobs, and illiterate
