2 Question 1: If you were to take a survey about what an organization wants; many would say that they have one common goal that they seek to achieve and that is to make a profit. To obtain this goal many things have to be factored in; from globalization to work place diversity. But in order to understand these factors you will need to be able to understand the behavior within an organization. At my present job there have been a lot of changes from the top to the bottom. One of the most recent changes is a decrease in the work force. Our superintendent has done an excellent job with keeping the lines of communication open and sharing what the board has recommended to elevate some of the shortages. Her reassurance that things will get better is very aspiring, she understands that in order to keep giving our students the highest quality of education she must assess every situation carefully. Though losing your job or a pay decrease is never good it is good to know that your boss is concerned about your well-being. One step they took to keep morale up was to continue to let our pensions grow to reflect our yearly raises even though it’s been three years since we’ve had a raise. They have also offered early retirement with full pension for those that have at least twenty years of service. They have also implemented a yearly survey to see what the staff needs are. I feel my organization is doing its best to foster positive changes in the company by allowing their employees to be a part of the major decisions that we are facing in these days. Question 2: Motivation is not a personal trait and should not be looked at in that manner. Instead it should be looked at as what are people motivated by? There are many theories on motivation; one theory is the hierarchy theory. The hierarchy of needs theory basically states that a human has five basic needs and they are physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self- actualization. With each need becoming dominant as the previous need is satisfied. If this theory is applied in an organization it could increase employee performance in that it hones in on the

3 five needs. By providing a security guard to patrol the building a worker will feel safer while working which will lead them to finish more projects. Socially everyone wants to fit in; but being accepted on the job leads to a feeling of appreciation. And if an employee feels appreciated they will work harder which will increase their performance level. Self-actualization will drive an employee in growth and self-fulfillment. When you are able to move up within a company and earn more money it gives you a sense of accomplishment. It is also self-fulfilling to the employee which leads to a higher productivity level. Other theories can increase an employee’s performance by improving one’s attitude about work. If an employee feels that they are working a dead end job with no hopes of promotion or pay increase the work they produce will be less
