Management Review Chapter 1: Management is getting work done through others. As a manager your job is to not do the work but to help others do theirs. Efficiency is getting work done with a minimum of effort, expense of waste. Effectiveness is accomplishing tasks that help fulfill organizational objectives such as customer service and satisfaction. 4 Management Functions: 1. Planning -involves determining organizational goals and a means for achieving them. 2. Organizing - deciding where decisions will be made, who will do what jobs and tasks, and who will work for whom in the company. 3. Leading - involves inspiring and motivating workers to work hard to achieve organizational goals. 4. Controlling - monitoring progress toward goal achievement and taking corrective action when progress isn’t being made. The basic control process involves setting standards to achieve goals, comparing actual performance to those standards, and then making changes to return performance to those standards. Different kinds of managers: 1. Top Managers - hold positions like Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Information Officer (CIO), and are responsible for the direction of the organization. Top managers are responsible for: a. Creating a context for change b. Developing commitment and ownership in employees c. Creating a positive organizational culture through language and action d. Monitoring their business environment 2. Middle Managers - hold positions like plant manager, regional manager, and divisional manager. Middle Managers are responsible for: a. Plan and allocate resources to meet objectives b. Coordinate and link groups, departments, and divisions c. Monitor and manage the performance of subunits and managers who report to them d. Implement changes or strategies generated by top managers
