Instructor Sarah Goldfarb Expository Writing Section LH Assignment Four October 27 th , 2009 Readings: Peter Singer and Jim Mason, “Meat and Milk Factories” Christine Keneally, “You Have Gestures” Tim O’Brien, “How to Tell a True War Story” As we have seen in our analysis of her essay “You Have Gestures” in our last paper, Christine Keneally believes that empathy towards others indicates a progression in the human condition from our primate ancestors. She correspondingly asserts that engaging in competitive behavior, as opposed to cultivating trust, implies a lesser degree of development in the trajectory of evolution from ape to human, because distrustful communication involves a lower degree of interaction than empathetic communication. Keneally writes that “Chimps don’t spontaneously point in this fashion, and Tomasello believes it is due to a fundamental difference in the balance of cooperation and competition within the species.
