Running head: Changes of Vietnamese American family culture 2 In the United States, the Vietnamese culture has changed since Vietnamese had come to the United States. Vietnamese typically built communities which are consisted of close family and relatives; however, American thinks that individual life and private personal areas are very important. This difference is bound, and the Vietnamese who are living in the United States and absorbing in American culture have made their new culture, especially at the culture which has relations with family. Most Vietnamese still try keeping their typical culture, but some of them make their family structure from extended family to unclear family, and newly divide roles between the husband and the wife. Running head: Changes of Vietnamese American family culture 3 Vietnamese tend to build communities among families and relatives, think that the communities are more important than individuals; therefore, they depend on their family and relatives when they suffered from dangerous and serious problems and help each other. (Do, Hien Duc. 1999) When they came to the United States, they built communities which are consisted of their family and relatives, and helped each other. The communities help Vietnamese absorb in American culture, but Vietnamese culture, especially family structure and roles, has been changed by American culture which is differ from their own culture while they inhabiting the United States. This report is a kind of way to show you the changes of Vietnamese family structure, and roles in family. Description of Event I had to find any Vietnamese American family to observe the new family structure and new roles in family in the United States. Fortunately, one of my friends has been staying at the house of Vietnamese American family, so I have visited the Vietnamese family several times. Every time I visited the family, I observed the family either at second floor or the living room. I could not take their pictures because they did not want that. I have observed what the family structure is, how the husband and wife divide their housework, and what is important when the parents raise their child. Because I visited the family after finishing annotated bibliography about Vietnamese, I was able to look for new culture which has been changed in the United States, and to compare with Vietnamese typical culture and Vietnamese American culture. The family is consisted of parents who are the first generation and a child who was born
