Late penalty = 5% per day, up to 7 days, after which material will not be accepted. NOTES: Marks, shown in brackets, will be given for workings, as well as for final answers. Total marks = 80. Show all workings and units (preferably SI units). QUESTIONS: 1. Figure 1 below shows coincident measurements of the infrared emission spectrum of the cloud-free atmosphere at: (a) 20 km looking downward from an aircraft over the polar ice sheet, and (b) at the surface looking upward . Based on these two measured spectra, answer each of the following questions. You may find useful information in Figure 2 below. [3 marks each, for 12 total] (a) What is the approximate temperature of the surface of the ice sheet, and how do you know? (b) What is the approximate temperature of the near-surface air, and how do you know? (c) What is the approximate temperature of the air at the aircraft’s flight altitude of 20 km, and how do you know? (d)
