Gave the State of the Union address to Congress Occasionally he would veto congressional laws This power was not extended to other presidents Took a very active role in foreign affairs Most of the power he expanded diminished when he left office His power outside of the Constitution came from who he was Set 2 term precedence Thomas Jefferson Purchased the Louisiana Territory Presidents wrote out the state of the union and sent to congress First president as a “party leader” (democratic republicans) Andrew Jackson Keeps people loyal to party by giving them government jobs Thinks of himself as a president who is in office because of the support of the everyday man 6x the number of voters than before went to polls in 1828 election Jackson utilized the veto power most so far (he’d veto what he didn’t like)
