Recent Presidents Move from the “heroic” presidency of FDR to the “imperial” presidency— presidents that go beyond the extent of their jobs with Congress Ex: LBJ escalating Vietnam without consideration of Congress, Nixon that decides to impound funds without consideration of Congress Presidents don’t have coattails—winning their election does not help other members of their party Reagan got Congress to pass a tax cut in his first year—sometimes was on top of the world and sometimes looked like a no-win president Bush Sr and Clinton both had negative coattails. If they were supported by their party, that person was less likely to be elected to office. Popularity fluctuated a lot Presidential popularity now is more based on rallying behind a cause (ebbs & flows) II. Democracy and the Court
