CHFD 3710 The united states today has more 100-year olds than ever before Biologists and physiologists study aging in everything from one-celled animals to human populations Intrinsic aging includes decreases in lung capacity, loss of brain cells, and hardened arteries. Extrinsic aging includes changes in the body due to sunlight, smoking, or noise Strehler lists hour criteria for intrinsic(or true aging): Universal Basic to the organism Progressive Deleterious Programmed theories say that the same processes that cause animals to grow and thrive also lead to senescence and death Human life begins with a single fertilized cell Cells produce less energy, make enzymes more slowly, and allow waste to fill up inside them. Eventually cells stop dividing. Biologists calls this the phase III phenomenon Glandular tissues make up the endocrine system Researchers have known for some time that the production of the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone tends to decrease as we age
