Unformatted text preview: EE 571/471 Sustainable Energy Systems David Shaw 1/20/2010 Summary of discussions Sustainable energy systems consist of Nuclear, renewables Energy policy consists of Development of SES Cleaner Combustion of fossil fuels for primary energy generation Reduced reliance on foreign oil Energy efficiency Lifestyle change through public education Less is more Summary of discussions (contd) 3 dimensions of sustainability Economic/financial How to economically preserve the services and lifestyle in developed countries which historically have been enabled by high per capita fossil fuel consumption? Ecology/environment -- How to prevent ecological/environmental damages from rapid urbanization/ energy consumption? Social/poverty How to resolve the conflicts between biodiversity and eradication of poverty? Reading assignment Read Chapter 1 Skip sec. 1.7, and all equations Read Chapter 2 Skip all formula -- Equ (2-1) to (2-9) Read the paper by Hall et al (attached in ublearns) Why is it that experts have had such a dismal record in the prediction of world oil reserves and production? Give a short description on what is Hubbert peak oil theory. (Do not turn in your paper on this) Thermodynamic cycles Most engines are subject to thermodynamic law in their operational efficiencies. Carnot efficiency = (T h- T c )/T h T h, T c = 530 C, 80 C, respectively, Carnot eff = 56% Generally, overall eff for large primary powerplants ~30 to 44% Rocket engines have higher eff because higher T h More on sustainability What is sustainability? hmmm dont know what it means but it sounds good.. like some words on restaurant menu (Solow 1991) UNESCO: every generation should leave water, air and soil resources as pure and unpolluted as it came on earth each generation should leave undiminished all the species of animals it found existing on earth UN Conference on Environment and Development (Rio 1992) Production of toxic components, such as lead in gasoline Alternative sources of energy to replace the use of fossil fuels New reliance on public transportation systems Shortage of water Establishment of Commission for Sustainable Development Equitable, global, future generations Vague, and not a good guide for making important public policy Sustainability Clearly the notion of sustainability is about Equitable, global, future generations It implies that we have an moral obligation for the poor and future generations. Is it doable? At least it is easier to rationalize the concept of equitable distribution with the future generations than with the current poor people around the world....
