Psychology notes day 3   9-7-2010 Contemporary psychology Cross cultural prospective -called the “fourth force: of psychology -Influence of the culture on behavior and Mental processes Terminology -Norms: the unwritten rules of a culture. (Unspoken Law) -Ethnocentrism: The belief that your culture is superior or right. America is very  much that way. -Individualistic Culture: a culture where the individuals decision is based on the  individuals needs. -Collectivistic culture: the individuals needs are less than the needs of the group.  Specialty areas:  -Biological -Clinical/ Counseling:  clinical-working with people who have serious issues Counceling- working with people with minor issues.  -Cognitive: Specializes in the mental processes. They do not focus on behavior  solely brain functions and internal workings.  - Developmental : Studying the growth and decline of humans. - Social : How the personality Develops and how to categorize that personality. - Industrial/ Organizational : To help maximize the productivity of employees - Forensic : Why Someone May have committed a crime.  - Health :  The Prevention of mental Illnesses - Rehabilitation : To help Understand addictions and the recovery from them - Sports : Help Improve Performance Educational : To improve the students learning experiences  - Experimental : They may be looking at multiple types of psychology. Scientific Method:  - A set of assumptions, Attitudes, procedures that Guides researches in: o What to investigate o How to investigate o Draw conclusions based on results
