Title: Finding the Ratio of Moles of Reactants in a Chemical Reaction Date: 18 October 2010 Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the mole ratio of two reactants by the method of continuous variations. The stoichiometric ratios for the reactants in the balanced chemical equation should generate the most heat and produce the maximum temperature change. This temperature change will be proportional to the amount of reaction that occurs. Using the method of continuous variations and graphical analysis can provide the mole ratio for reactants that has unknown identity. Hypothesis: The hypothesis is that the mole ratio of two reactants can be found by measuring the change of temperature during the reaction. From the understanding of stoichiometry, the mole ratio in a balanced equation should consume the greatest amount of reactants. For this experiment, the ratio of the greatest temperature change produced should be the balanced ratio. Materials:
