CHEM 0110 QUIZ 2 WEEK 3 MONDAY, 1:00 PM September 13, 2010 NAME_______________________________________________________________________ 1. A jar of peanut butter contained the following fascinating information on the label. It contained 16 servings and each serving was 2 tbsp (tablespoons) and weighed 32g. a) Calculate the total mass in grams of peanut butter in this jar. b) Calculate the volume in pints of peanut butter in the jar, given that 1 tbsp is equal to exactly one-half of a fluid ounce and 16 fluid ounces make one pint. Show your work, including all units! 2. Give the names or formulae of two molecular compounds, which can be found in a common drink such as coca cola or beer. ANSWERS 1. a) Mass = 16 x 32 g = 512g b) # of tbsp = 16 servings x serving 1 tbsp 2 = 32 tbsp Volume = 32 tbsp x oz. fl. 16 pt 1 x tbsp 1 oz. fl. 0.500 = 1.0 pint 2. Accept any valid answers. For example: water, H 2 O; sugar, C 6 H 12 O 6 or C 12 H 22 O 11 ; ethanol, C 2 H 6 O; phosphoric acid, H 3 PO 4 , carbon dioxide, CO 2 , etc. For Make-up Only Regular recitation Day: Time: instructor: Quiz Score: Group score: Scores recorded by:

CHEM 0110 QUIZ 2 WEEK 3 MONDAY, 6:00 PM September 13, 2010 NAME_______________________________________________________________________ 1. An American car is claimed to get 32.5 miles per gallon of gasoline, while a similar foreign model claims 12.15 km per liter. Which is more efficient? Show your work. 1 mile = 1.609 km; 1 gallon = 3.785 L Check your conclusion by showing that the two efficiencies are fairly similar, as you might expect. 2. The molecular compound N 2 H 4 (hydrazine) is one in which each N atom forms its usual 3 bonds and H also forms its usual number of bonds (all single bonds). Suggest a structural formula for N 2 H 4 . ANSWERS 1. For the foreign model, Efficiency = gal 1 L 3.785 x km 1.609 mile 1 x L 1 km 12.15 = 28.58 mile/gal. The two values are quite similar but the US model is the more efficient. 2. N forms 3 bonds, H forms 1 bond For Make-up Only Regular recitation Day: Time: instructor: Quiz Score: Group score: Scores recorded by: H N N H H H

CHEM 0110 QUIZ 2 WEEK 3 TUESDAY, 8:00 AM September 14, 2010 NAME_______________________________________________________________________ 1. Describe in detail the contents of the container in the picture (C). Use terms such as atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, binary, polyatomic, solid, liquid, gas. 2. A mass of 37.0g of hydrazine, N 2 H 4 , contains 6.96 x 10 23 N 2 H 4 molecules. Using this information only: a) Determine the number of H atoms in 74.0g of hydrazine. Hint: the answer is NOT 1.39 x 10 24 . b) Determine the mass in grams of one N 2 H 4 molecule. Show your work! ANSWERS
