Aluminum (Al) always has an oxidation state of +3 in compounds. Determine the oxidation state of sulfur in each of the following compounds: (a) Al 2 S 3 ; (b) Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . Show your work!! ANSWERS 1. Chromium(III) sulfate is Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and the other product is magnesium sulfate, which has the formula MgSO 4 . Thus the equation is: 3 Mg(s) + Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 (aq) 3 MgSO 4 (aq) + 2 Cr(s) 2. (a) By the sum rule, 2(+3) + 3(X) = 0. This yields X = -2. So the oxidation state of S is -2. (b) We know that the charge on the SO 4 2- ion is -2 (we can also work this out from the formula of the compound). Also oxygen has its usual oxidation state of -2.
