ANSWERS 1. a) UV radiation because the wavelength 250 nm is smaller than 1.5 μ m (=1500 nm) and energy is inversely proportional to wavelength. b) The n = 5 to n = 2 transition because the electron jump is larger, which means that the energy difference is larger. 2. a) 5 orbitals; b) 9 orbitals (1, 3 and 5 respectively in the 3s, 3p and 3d subshells) 3. 4d indicates n = 4, = 2, so there is no choice here. However m l can have any integral value in the range -2 to +2, i.e. m = -2 or -1 or 0 or +1 or +2.
