2 1.Summary This test is aim to teach students how to do a nondestructive test. For this lab, the students will be using ten different metallic specimens. The test will be used to identify mechanical flaws in base metals and welds. Students will test the specimens for flaws without breaking the specimen or assembly. In the test, there will be three methods used are visual inspection, magnetic particle testing, and liquid penetrant. The specimens will be evaluated using one or more the methods. Visual inspection method is the easiest out all three types. Students will identify the flaws on the surface of every specimen. Before identifying the flaws, students will measure the length of each specimen. Afterwards, they will clean the specimens using a metal brush especially around the area of welds to remove any debris and dust. Specimen: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Magnetic particle testing method uses iron particles which when subjected to an electrical field migrate towards location of internal or subsurface flaws. The method can only be applied to metal specimens. For this method, specimens 1, 5, and 10 will be used. Magnetic powder is poured on the welded areas of the specimens. The Contour Probe is turned on and faces the top of the specimens. The Contour Probe will produce magnetic field to detect cracks and any imperfections on the specimens. Iron powder migrates towards potential cracks. The method is used to recognize any imperfections that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Specimen: 1, 5,10 The third method called liquid penetrant is used with colored paint like substance. The substance is sprayed on the surface of materials. It is mostly concentrated at the location of the subsurface flaws make it visible. First applied to the specimens is SKC-S Aerosol as cleaner. Next, the SKL-SP2 Aerosol is used as Penetrant. After waiting for 10 minutes, a cloth is used to remove the excess Penetrant. The SKD-S2 Aerosol is used as a Developer. The specimens applied with Developer will remain undisturbed for 15 minutes. Identify the area of the specimen with concentrated red color. The concentrated area of red shows some discontinuity or potential defect. Focus most on the butt and Philip welds. Specimen: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Besides the experiment, conduct a research online. Find two NDT cases from real world designs to the report. Find one case where magnetic particle testing was used and one where liquid penetrant was used. Discuss why you think each method is more appropriate for each case. Substantiate your report with pictures and references.
