English 2 4-15-01 Question #1 A Comparison of Poe and Chopin In Chopin’s, The Story of an Hour and Poe’s, The Black Cat we see the similarities and the vast differences associated with the death of the wife figure. In The Black Cat the death of the wife is a murder committed by the husband. Even though she was not the desired target, the husband thinks about her death without remorse. His original target was the black cat, which he himself had adopted. As the story goes he first comes in contact with a black cat that follows him home. At first the cat and the husband become good friends. As time goes on however, the husband develops extreme animosity towards the cat. One morning the husband slips a noose around the cat’s neck and goes outside and hangs it in a tree. “-hung it with tears streaming from my eyes, and with the bitterest remorse at my heart-“. (1) That night he was aroused from his sleep by a fire, which consumed his house. After a time, he noticed another cat when he was walking home. Feeling guilt for the atrocity that he had committed he offered to buy it from who he assumed was the owner. The would be owner stated that he had no knowledge of the animal. So the husband soon adopted it. Again the husband grew disgusted of the “monster”, (2) and only refrained from beating it because of what
