5/10/01 When we first arrived at the Coast Guard Academy we were met by 1/C Cadet Covert (OPS) and shown to the drill down. The drill down consisted of several 4/C cadets, two from each of the eight companies, standing at attention. They were graded based on knowledge of the questions asked, accuracy of drill movements, and the ability to know when to grab the rifle back from the person grading them. It was great to also see upperclassmen there, cheering on their company’s 4/C. I was good to see that upperclass still had some competition between companies as well. This differs greatly at the Merchant Marine Academy. As plebes, we take 10 tests called “Plebe Knowledge Tests”. There is not the individual pressure that occurs during the drill down. I think that the drill down is a better way to assess when the 4/C are to be recognized. However, at the USMMA we don’t all take part in drill team. This restricts our ability to have a drill down competition. I would like to see USMMA take part in an all regiment drill. After the drill down we met with our escorts.
