The submission of the report is in accordance with the requirements for the award of the degree of M.Sc in Computer and Network Engineering under the auspices of the University. Image Compression for Medical Images Page 2 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First, I thank my Supervisor Mr. John M Holding, for his continuous support in my MSc. Dissertation program. John was always there to listen and to give advice. He is responsible for involving me in the Archie project in the first place. He taught me how to ask questions and express my ideas. He showed me different ways to approach a research problem and the need to be persistent to accomplish any goal. I greatly appreciate the help and support given to me by project supervisor. I also acknowledge with thanks, the assistance and guidance afforded me by the Supervisor of this dissertation. Let me also say ‘thank you’ to the people of the staff of SHU Learning Centre, who has helped to source copies of a substantial amount of the literature used in this work. Last, but not least, I thank my family: my parents, Srinivas .K, and Manohari, for giving me life in the first place, for educating me with aspects from both arts and sciences, for unconditional support and encouragement to pursue my interests, even when the interests went beyond boundaries of language, field and geography. My brother Rahul .K, for refusing to answer my e-mails unless I have something interesting to say, for reminding me that my research should always be useful and serve good purposes for all humankind. Image Compression for Medical Images Page 3 ABSTRACT The main goal of this project "Implementation and Evaluation of Image Compression for Medical Images" is to develop a package using which medical image compression can be accomplished using certain techniques and to conclude that the wavelets results in better compression ratio among the techniques used. We have accomplished this using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). It is observed that good compression ratio have been achieved for these techniques. Thus the redundant data have been removed and the image with minimum number of pixels can be displayed. We have compared the compression ratios by DWT with different levels and conclude which level is the best for the compression of the medical image. This Package can be used for efficient storage and transmission of images over intranet....
