C.3: Defining, Measuring, Manipulating Variables 22:31 Operational definition : a definition of the variable in terms of operations the  researcher uses to measure or manipulate it Ex: operational def. of hunger: at least 5 hrs since eaten Nominal Scale : objects or individ are assigned to categories that have no  numerical properties “categorical variables” bc measuring scale involves dividing the data into  categories (ex: ethnicity: black=1, white=2) Ordinal Scale continuum “ranked data” bc ordered from highest to lowest Interval Scale Units of measurement between the #’s on the scale are all equal in size Ex: Fahrenheit (diff btwn 51/52 deg same as diff btwn 71/72 deg) Ratio Scale An absolute zero indicates an absence of the variable being measured Ex: weight: each has identity (indiv who weigh different have diff scores),  magnitude (lower weight receives lower scores), equal unit size (1lb is same  weight anywhere along scale) Discrete variables Whole number units or categories; no decimals/fractions (# of children) Continuous Variables Self-Report Measures Typically administered as questionnaires or interviews to measure how ppl  report that they act, think, or feel
