Kevin Lee Mr. Moran English 4 AP Period 3 19 August 2009 Single-combat Heroes In the 1950’s and the 60’s, a fierce competition was brewing up. A new arena of battlefield was opening up – the space – and the two strongest nations in the world at the time, the U.S. and the Soviet Union, were vying for the control of this new territory. In this turmoil, the seven bravest men who were chosen to be the first Americans into space caused a relatively short but breathtakingly fervent support from all groups of people. Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff recounts the fluctuating journey of these seven men and the tension that existed in this cold war period by including vivid details and facts with a touch of humor and a unique literary style. ‘The Right Stuff’, which is the title of the book as well as the theme, along with ‘single-combat warriors,’ are two of the forgotten traits in our society today and the author did a magnificent job on reminding us of this nation’s brilliance.
