Culture Definition: learned norms, beliefs, values, material and non-material artifacts, and language of any particular group o We learn culture through interaction It defines the way of life and gives meaning to a group Society: a group of people who share culture Beliefs Ideology of individualism: belief that if you work hard enough anyone can become part of the upper class in the U.S. Efforts for the benefit of the group Beliefs do affect how we behave Characteristics of Culture It is shared and diverse o Defines behavior, thoughts, and values o Makes human society possible It is learned o Not instinctual Complex behavior Unlearned All normal members of the species exhibit the behavior o Through socialization o Seems natural It is taken for granted o Engaged in without thinking o Rarely questioned The meaning of cultural products is socially constructed (symbolic)
