Sociology 210 Summer 2010 Assignment 6 (due Monday, August 9 at beginning of lecture) 1. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is commonly found in the ground in Midwestern states such as Michigan and has been linked to health problems after long-term exposure. Many homeowners use radon detectors in their basements to measure how muc h radon gas is present in their homes. How accurate are radon detectors sold to homeowners? To answer this question, university researchers placed 12 detectors in a chamber that exposed them to 105 picocuries per liter (pCi/l) of radon. The detector readings were as follows: 91.9 103.8 97.8 99.6 111.4 96.6 122.3 119.3 105.4 104.8 95 101.7 You can think of these numbers as a sample of detector readings that could have been drawn from a hypothetical normally distributed population of detector readings. Provide a 99% confidence interval for the population mean of detector readings based on this sample. In words, interpret the meaning of the confidence interval.
