2 What is Physiology? A physiologist is interested in “how things work.” Formal Definition: The biological study of the functions of living organisms and their parts. (American Heritage Dictionary) – Animal Physiology / Plant Physiology Operational Definition: The study of how cells interact with their “environment” to obtain the things required for life (“vital” substances). – Vital Substances = water, salts, oxygen, nutrients, heat, etc. Focus of BIO 203 is Animal Physiology External Environment (outside of organism) Internal Environment (inside of organism) cells exchange systems skin / integument

3 Exchange Systems • Any system that allows for the exchange of material (“Vital substances”) from – external environment to internal environment – internal environment to external environment • Examples: – Respiratory System (O 2 / CO 2 ) – Digestive System (nutrients / H 2 O) – Urinary System (excretion / H 2 O) – Circulatory System (distribution) Interstitial Space (ECF - interstitial fluid) External Environment Cell - Basic Unit of Physiology ICF H 2 O / Salts Wastes (nitrogenous) O 2 Nutrients CO 2 Digestive System Wastes (feces) Respiratory System (ECF - plasma) Circulatory System Excretory System Heat / Energy
