Leadership Case 2: Lockheed Martin’s Diversity Initiative 2. Vance Coffman took the first initiative in encouraging diversity by putting his efforts towards creating a work environment that fosters greater awareness and sensitivity to the need of the diverse employee population. Coffman paved the way for the company to ramp up a stronger more aggressive initiative, which recognized diversity as a business imperative contributing to mission success. Lockheed Martin started by establishing a framework that defined diversity as an inclusive team that value and leverage each person’s individuality. Proactive recruitment is the core to the corporation’s diversity initiatives. The company aligns itself with recruiting centers where diversity is continually included and drawn upon in talent searches. It is clear that Lockheed martin is committed to adding diversity to their talent base and is actively recruiting to accommodate their growing business. Finally, Lockheed martin created an executive diversity council in 2001 that is chaired by the company’s president and CEO. This initiative has lead to more than thirty local councils being formed in operating units as well. 3.
