If you have any problems accessing the course site, call the ACS Help Desk at 858-534-3ACS or e-mail LECTURE HOURS: 7L (B00) in York 2722 on Wednesdays, 6:00-6:50PM 7L (A00) in York 2722 on Wednesdays, 7:00-7:50PM Welcome to CHEM 7L , the primary introductory laboratory course for Chemistry. This course provides an introduction to experimental procedures used in synthetic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry. This course is preferably taken concurrently with Chemistry 6C (or after completion of the Chemistry 6A-C series). ADD/DROP DEADLINE: The deadline to add or to drop a CHEM lab course without a “W” is the end of the second lab meeting. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT Textbook/Notebook (NEW!): CHEM 7L Laboratory Manual (First Edition - ISBN 9780738042435). This custom laboratory manual package can be purchased at the UCSD Bookstore. It contains two components: the CHEM 7L lab manual and a lab notebook which are packaged together (you do NOT have to purchase a separate lab notebook). Proper Laboratory Apparel (Safety): Chemical splash goggles must be worn in the laboratory at all times. Safety glasses do not provide splash protection and are not permitted. A long lab coat and closed shoes (front and back. No sandals permitted!) are also required. Lab coats and splash goggles can be purchased at the University Bookstore. A Non-Graphing, Non-Programmable Scientific Calculator: Should be able to do basic arithmetic/statistics and scientific notation. No other types of calculators will be permitted during the exams. SAFETY EXAM All students in this introductory lab class are required to demonstrate an understanding of general laboratory safety and the UCSD Undergraduate Chemistry Lab Rules. Each student is responsible for studying these topics and passing a mandatory safety exam. An optional safety lecture will be presented twice: Tuesday evening, January 4, 6:00-8:00 PM and Wednesday morning, January 5, 8:00-10:00 AM (Multipurpose Room, Student Services Center) . The safety exam will be administered online (log onto WebCT and select: CHEM 7L Lab Safety Training ). Students may take the online exam any time during the availability period: Thursday, January 6 (6:00 PM) - Tuesday, January 11 (6:00 PM) . Exam scores will be available to students via WebCT after the test availability period closes; a passing score (75%) on the exam fulfills the safety requirement. It is the responsibility
