Module 46 MEDICAL TREATMENTS FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS Medical interventions may provide an alternative or supplement to psychotherapy Three types of medical treatment are available o Drug therapy, electroshock therapy, and psychosurgery Drug therapies In a booming area of psychopharmacology , a vast array of drugs is used for psychotherapeutic purposes o The study of the effects of drugs on psychological processes and disorders Most drugs work by acting on neurotransmitters Antianxiety drugs There has always been a great demand for antianxiety drugs o Tranquilizing medications used in the treatment of anxiety During 1950’s, barbiturates were used for anxious patients o Combat anxiety by depressing the central nervous system activity o Effective but highly addictive o Help patients relax but also cause clumsiness and drowsiness In 1960’s, benzodiazepines were developed o Librium, Valium, Xanax o Have the same desired effect and are less likely than barbiturates to cause drowsiness or addiction o Impact is almost immediate o Not as safe as were once thought
