Introductory definitions: Late childhood: approx. 8 – 11 years; early adolescence: 12 – 13. Internet use starts, in various forms, as early as 4 or 5 years of age. How is the internet used in childhood? Age 4/8- youtube – potentially maladaptive use of language 11- facebook – truncated lanugage patterns, “stylized” language construction 8 (since 5) – used websites for reading (was helpful), but then discovered…. games! 7 – has a gmail account – email use, + effect = practice writing letters 8 – google for everything – positive effect on communication and acquirement of information 2 – uses youtube through fam members – comes across sites of ABCs 5 – science games online – experience with word meanings based on these contexts
