Electric force and electric charge (23.1) Force acting between electrically charged objects. Electric charge determines the electric force. ( cf. mass in gravitational force) • Electric force is central force. • Electric force can be repulsive or attractive . ( cf . gravitational force always attractive ) • There are two kinds of electric charges.

Properties of electric charge (23.1) Electric charge can be positive or negative . • Electric charge is conserved , cannot be created. (can be transferred from one object to another object.) • Electric charge is quantized . (It has a minimum unit.) Elementary charge: e = 1.6 x 10 -19 Coulomb [C] Charge of one electron : −e (negative charge) Charge of one proton : +e (positive charge) Electrons can be unbound from atoms and can freely move in objects. (free electron) Charges of the same sign repel one another Charges with opposite signs attract one another.
