What is meant by the term “diet”? - What constitutes “diet” o Not what most people think of when they hear the word diet o What most people mean when they say “diet” is a low-calorie diet A pattern of eating that (they hope) will result in weight loss o Diet refers to a habitual pattern of eating o Mixed diet, vegetarian diet, vegan diet, low-carbohydrate diet, etc. - A habitual pattern of eating does not mean that you eat the same thing every day - It is an “average” of all the individual choices people make on a day-to-day basis - So you take the days you overeat, the days you hardly eat, the days you eat nothing but Oreo cookies, the days you feel guilty and eat nothing but vegetables 2. What are some of the problems with trying to accurately measure someone’s habitual diet? - How many days do you have to count before you get an accurate picture of habitual diet? o Nobody really knows - Daily variation, seasonal variations in diet patterns make it hard to get an accurate portrayal of someone’s habitual diet - Dietitians collect information for 3-7 days to estimate the typical pattern of dietary intake
