Kinesiology 110 Spring 2009 Professor Braun Lecture 31 questions 1. How do “fat-burning” dietary supplements (in theory) help control body weight and body fat? - In addition to exercise/diet approaches, there are many products available to control body weight and body fat o Some are low-energy alternatives o Some are designed to block nutrient absorption - Most dietary supplements are sold to “burn fat” - The idea is to raise metabolic rate and therefore increase the expenditure of energy = thermogenesis 2 The 2 main ingredients in “fat-burning” supplements are caffeine and ephedra. What does caffeine do? - What do these products have in common?? (until April 2004) o Caffeine o Ephedra - Caffeine is a general stimulant and increases metabolic rate o Heart rate, blood pressure and energy expenditure all do increase with caffeine use Especially at high doses and in people who are not habitual users - No dietary supplement shows the promise and perils of supplement use more than ephedra - Just before it was banned, sales of ephedra were over $1 billion per year
