CHAPTER 7 – ENERGY AND METABOLISM BIOLOGICAL WORK Matter o Anything that has mass and takes up space Energy o The capacity to do work – any change in the state or motion of matter Kilojoules (kJ) o The unit of work Kilocalories (kcal) o The unit of heat energy 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ Organisms carry out conversions between potential energy and kinetic energy Kinetic energy o Energy of motion Potential energy o Capacity to do work as a result of position or state Chemical energy o Potential energy stored in chemical bonds THE LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS Thermodynamics o The study of energy and its transformations Closed system o Does not exchange energy with its surroundings Open system o Can exchange energy with its surroundings The total energy in the universe does not change First law of thermodynamics o Energy cannot be created or destroyed, although it can be transferred or converted from one form to another The entropy of the universe is increasing Second law of thermodynamics o When energy is converted from one form to another, some usable energy is converted into heat that disperses into the surroundings Heat o The kinetic energy of randomly moving particles Entropy (S) o A measure of the unusable energy in the universe ENERGY AND METABOLISM

Metabolism o The sum of all the chemical activities taking place in an organism Anabolism o Includes the various pathways in which complex molecules are synthesized from simpler substances (require energy) Catabolism o Includes the various pathways in which larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones (give off energy) Enthalpy is the total potential energy of a system Enthalpy (H) o The total potential energy of a system Free energy is available to do cell work Free energy (G)
