Listening Journal 2 Chapter 3 Cryin’ in the Chapel – Done by the Orioles. A slow song with a steady beat. The song sounds like a crossover because they are using electric instruments and has a slow but pop sound. They gave a doo-wop sound to this song which made it unique. Sh-Boom (Chords) – Surprised to see that this song was in the movie “Cars”. This version had more singers in it. There was a guitar and a drum beat in it. Both versions had a breakdown in the song with a trumpet solo. Sh-Boom (Crew Cuts) – Version seemed dryer, as in there was less going on. I liked the Chords version better because it seemed more fuller. This one had one singer mainly until closer to the end of the song. This one also had a trumpet solo which made them similar. Shake, Rattle, & Roll (Turner) – Sung by a colored man. Lyrics were different, this version was more laid back and only had one singer. Since this was the original the song had to be dryer. The lyrics were a little dirtier and weren’t used on the public radio like described in class. Shake, Rattle, & Roll (Haley) – Sung by a white man. Lyrics were different, the whole band got into this verison, it was more upbeat and fun. The tempo and beat of the song was the same between each one. This verison had the band clapping and stomping. The 8 and 9 version were very different then the first two. Elvis gave the song a country feel with his twangy guitar. The song consisted of a piano guitar drums and a singer. The lyrics by Elvis were very dirty. They seemed normal but really everyone knew what he meant. I like the Haley and the Comets version the best. The old Elvis was more laid back and conservative with his style of music.
