Essay I Suggestions: Compare and contrast the political implications of Confucianism and Hinduism in India and China during the classical era. I. Think about the question. a. Consider important background information: i. Define the important dates, players, events of your era. ii. The classical era refers to the period between 1000 BCE – 500 BCE. iii. Which dynasties/rulers reigned during that period? How did they come to power? iv. What important events took place? Why? v. The question asks about Confucianism and Hinduism? When, why, how, and where did each belief system emerge? 1. What impact did these two belief systems have on their respective societies? Why? 2. Specifically, the question asks about political implications of the application of these two belief systems. In what political context did each system emerge, and why? How did Confucianism/Hinduism impact political structures in China and India? II. Thesis: Your first paragraph needs to be well-structured, and it needs to provide a basic indication of how you intend to answer the question. Provide an argument, and tell the reader how you intend to support your argument. i. ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!! Don’t regurgitate everything you know. ii. Include MAJOR SIMILARITIES (compare). 1. Be sure to discuss major, relevant similarities. The danger with using the template is that you may be tempted to “plug in” any similarity you can think of. But if you miss the main similarities, you don’t have a sustainable thesis, and you’ll have difficulty supporting your argument with relevant historical support, as well as making direct, relevant comparisons. So you’ll lose several points in the rubric. iii. For this essay, the major similarity you should have discussed in your thesis paragraph is: 1. Both belief systems promoted a strict social hierarchy. Hinduism promoted the caste system, and Confucianism promoted the Five Relationships. iv. MAJOR DIFFERENCES (contrast) 1.
