Sweeney and Thomas A. Williams. Statistics for Business and Economics . 10 th edition: Thomson South-Western, 2008. • All homework will be submitted online using the Aplia system. For instructions, click the link that says “Aplia” from the course ELMS webpage. • Additionally, you can access the course website at www.elms.umd.edu .The website contains this syllabus with important links to sample exams as well as any announcements. Course objective: This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the use of statistics in economics. Although this undertaking can be a challenging, this training will not only help students prepare for econometrics but also provide them with a preliminary understanding of what many professional economists actually do. Topics include: probability, random variables and their distributions, sampling theory, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression analysis and correlation. Grading: 1. Homework The homework assignments are due on the following days: • Problem Set 1 will be due Friday, February 13 by 5pm. • Problem Set 2 will be due Friday, February 20 by 5pm. • Problem Set 3 will be due Friday, February 27 by 5pm. • Problem Set 4 will be due Friday, March 6 by 5pm. • Problem Set 5 will be due Friday, April 3 by 5pm. • Problem Set 6 will be due Friday, April 10 by 5pm.
