Richard Germade-Craan Chem 1200 Section 04 Lab 2: Exploring LeChatelier’s Principle Post Lab 1. 2 nd Well Reaction: 2HCl+CoCl 2 ↔ [CoCl 4 ] 2- +2H + The reaction takes place between the cobaltous chloride and hydrochloric acid. 2. The color turned to the original pink with the addition of 2 drops of H 2 O, after the addition of concentrate HCl, the color returned to a dark blue-purple. This is because the H 2 O disturbed the equilibrium of the solution, and the HCl returned the solution to equilibrium. 3. The 4 th well, after 3 minutes in a hot water bath, was a dark purple; after 5 minutes the solution’s color lightened a little. The 5 th well, after 3 minutes in an ice water bath, was the original pink; after 5 minutes the solution’s color darkened a little. At low temperatures, the equilibrium is shifted right, and is pink in color. At higher temperatures, the equilibrium lies to the left and is blue in color. The solution in the 4 th well is exothermic, and will try to release heat. The 5
