Assignment 1
Due: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2010

Please do the problems in order and write neatly.
Trim the edges on spiral notebook paper
.
Show all your work in each problem; it is better to say too much rather than too little, especially
if the answer turns out to be wrong (think “partial credit”).
No credit will be awarded if the
answer is given without showing or explaining how it was determined
. Please refer to the
section on Academic Integrity in the syllabus regarding collaboration.
You may leave factorials, binomial coefficients, and indicated products or quotients of these in
your answers, unless otherwise directed.
Where appropriate, you may solve problems either using formulas or using a Venn diagram (or
some of each). If you do use a Venn diagram to obtain value(s),
you must explain
how you
obtained all of the value(s) pictured in your diagram, and how you used them to obtain the
answer.
1.
Of 100 patients visiting a primary care physician’s office last month, 30 were referred to
specialists and 40 required lab work. Thirtyfive of the 100 visits resulted in neither a referral
to a specialist nor lab work. How many of the patients both required lab work and were
referred to a specialist?
