Quantum Nature of Light Light is energy in the form of electromagnetic fields and is characterized by its frequency, ν , and wavelength, λ . The Photon is the quantum of electromagnetic energy. It has an energy E = h ν = hc/ λ. The energy contained in a light beam is measured by how many “photons” are impinging. Most sources of light are made up of many photons of different frequency. The distribution of photons of different frequencies is the spectrum of the light

Characteristics of Light There are several key characteristics of the incident solar energy which are critical in determining how the incident sunlight interacts with a photovoltaic converter or any other object. The important characteristics of the incident solar energy are: the spectral content of the incident light; the radiant power density from the sun; the angle at which the incident solar radiation strikes a photovoltaic module; and the radiant energy from the sun throughout a year or day http://pvcdrom.pveducation.org/index.html
