Unformatted text preview: Understanding the Two—“’av ANOVA The Two—Way AN OVA looks at the relationship between two variables & a DV. We can stud}r the joint eﬁects using a factorial design. This allows us to look at main effects alone, and the interaction between our IVs, on our DV. The term “Factor” refers to our IVs. The initial tests cmducted in a 2—way ANOVA are the omnibus or overall tests ofthe main and interaction effects. When looking at the results, we consider the following: 0 First main effect: Are the population means on the DV the same across levels of the 1“ factor averaging across levels of the 2"”1 factor? I Is there a relationship between independent variable it considered alone, and the DV'? 0 Second main eﬁ'ect: Are the population means on the DV the same across levels of the 2“”1 factor averaging across levels of the 1St factor? I Is there a relationship between independent variable B, considered alone, and the DV'? 0 Interaction Effect: Are the diﬂ'erenoes in the population means on the DV among levels of the ﬁrst: factor the same across levels of the 2“Ii factor? I Is there a relationship between IV A and IV B, considered in combination, and the DV, independent of the effects of variable A alone and variable B alone? If one or more of the overall eﬁects are signiﬁcant, various follow—up tests can be concluded. Tukey’s HSD is one example of a post—hoe test: that we can use to tease apart a signiﬁcant main effect, but should onlybe used when there is a main eﬂ'ect that has MORE THAN TWO LEVELS. Null Hypotheses: -) Each main effect has a null hypothesis. For this example, the null hypothesis for Factor A (gender) states that the means for both genders do not differ. -) There is also a null hypothesis for the interaction eﬂ'ect, which states that the mean differences on the DV as a ﬁmction of one IV are the same at each level of the other IV.
