RATIONAL PERSONAL BELIEFS 1. What you tell yourself has the greatest of power over your life. What you tell yourself determines whether you feel cheerful or gloomy and worried. Or worthwhile or worthless. What you tell yourself has an enormous impact on your life. What you tell yourself ultimately determines what you are and are not able to do. 2. Happiness and unhappiness are a result of your own thoughts, the way you think about situations. You can create happiness through changing your thinking. 3. You are responsible for your emotions. You can decide whether to be happy or miserable. You can create joy through changing your thinking. 4. Just because something once strongly affected you, there is no reason it should continue to do so indefinitely. 5. The past and the future exist only in your thoughts. 6. You are a human being in the process of improving and growing. No need to compete with anyone; there is no way to measure which person is the best anyway. 7. Your imperfect mistakes have been perfect opportunities for a wealth of learning. So don’t be mistaken about mistakes; the more unpleasant it is, the more pleasant will be your learning. 8. Most of the things we worry about never happen anyway so why spend time in pointless, time- consuming worry. 9. Because of your learning experiences, you are a different person now from the one you were in the past. 10. Starting now, you are entitled to tell yourself that you are loveable. 11. Starting now, if you want to be loved, you have to give love. 12. Starting now, you can successfully cope with things which may have previously upset you. 13. Starting now, you can begin to focus more on your strengths and positive attributes—you can become more aware of your ability to overcome obstacles. 14. Starting now, you can stop blaming yourself for what you did that you should not have done or what you did not do that you should have done, and you can forgive yourself.

I can put up with what I don’t like. 3. I’m stupid. What I did was stupid. 4. He stinks! He’s not perfect , either. 5. This shouldn’t have happened This should have happened because it did! 6. I am to be blamed. I am at fault but am not to be blamed. 7. He has no right. He has every right to follow his own mind though I wish he wouldn’t have exercised that right! 8. I need him/her to do that. I want/ desire/ prefer him/her to do that – but I don’t have to have what I want 9. Things always go wrong. Sometimes--if not frequently—things will go wrong. Every time
