2/25/11 What is abnormal behavior? There is no universal agreement on what abnormality or disorder ultimately mean However, there are some clear elements Keep in mind: no one element is both necessary and sufficient Necessary: All cases must possess For example , a necessary condition for getting an A in this class is that a student takes all 3 exams. This means that if a student does not take all three exams, then a student will not get an A, or, equivalently, if a student gets an A, then a student took all 3 exams. l Sufficient: All that it needed For example, a sufficient condition for getting an A in this is getting an A on every piece of graded work in the course. This means that if a student gets an A on every piece of graded work in the course, then the student gets an A. These elements can change over time! l Mostly with changing cultural norms
