Lab 7 Structural Geology Structural Geology : study of how geologic units are arranged when they are first formed and then how they are deformed. Geological Map : shows the distribution of rocks at the Earth’s surface. Different symbols and colors are used to represent characteristics of the rocks and the different rock units. Formations : map-able units of rock Members : subdivision of formations Contacts : boundaries between geologic units Geological Cross Section : a vertical slice through the Earth. Attitude of Rocks : Strike : For an inclined plane the strike is the compass direction of any horizontal line on the plane. Dip: the angle between a horizontal plane and the inclined plane, always measured perpendicular to the direction of strike. -Water on the rock method: pour water on a rock and the direction that the water runs down the rock is the dip direction and perpendicular to that is the strike. ex) Faults: Fracture in a rock along which there is movement Fault Plane : the surface of fracture along which the movement has occurred Hanging Wall : block of rock which lies above the fault plane (if you are standing on the fault, this blocks ‘hangs’ over your head) Footwall : block of rock which lies beneath the fault plane (it is the rock under your FOOT when you stand on the fault)

Result from Stresses : Tension (extensional): pulling apart Compression: pushing together Shear: slippage, or tearing Types of Faults: Normal: fault that results from the hanging wall moving down with respect to the footwall; the result of extensional stresses Reverse : fault which results from the hanging wall moving up with respect to the footwall; the result of compressional stresses.
