March 30, 2010 Mendicant Orders o Friars o Mendicant is latin for ‘to beg’ St. Francis of Assisi 1182-1226 o Son of a wealthy merchant o “Go, Francis, and repair my house” Heard a voice from God speaking about the church o Renounced his wealth and became a beggar o He wandered around repairing churches o Vita apostolic What every church member strives to live by Francis and his followers o Wrote a rule for his followers: Absolute Poverty Must beg for food and clothing Must do physical labor for lodging Forbidden to touch money Forbidden to live in monasteries Patron Saint of Animals and the Environment o Preached that the world was intrinsically good o Nature and its beauty was evidence of God o How does this compare to the Cathars?
