How they build and manage their empires? Who was in charge? What type of govt? Spain used income from churches to expand imperial influence, seized leverage from church appointments, and used cathedrals to explain invasion. Portugal used an empire of men governed by rulers. They clashed regularly with Spain. Trading Posts and/or Colonies Established Spain exchanged extensively from North and South America, and exchanged for coal, iron, and grain silver and gold. We participated in the triangular Atlantic trading network, too. We rely heavily on the slave trade, as well. Since they were so small, they could not protect their trade posts. Technological Innovations What technologies did this empire utilize or develop to establish and maintain their sea- based empire? They depended extensively on gunpowder to support the troops with firearms and cannons and utilized swords and lances as well. The Portuguese also employed navigational inventions such as the compass and astrolabe. They also built a new ship design named the caravel.
